- Definition: Das vormals als Barr-Körperchen bezeichnete Geschlechtschromatin.
- Kontext: Im Gegensatz zu konstitutivem Heterochromatin ist fakultatives Heterochromatin ein sichtbarer Hinweis auf die Regulation der Aktivität ganzer Gengruppen. Hierfür werden meist größere Anteile des Euchromatins, ganze Chromosomen oder sogar vollständige Chromosomensätze durch dichtere Verpackung inaktiviert. Das wohl bekannteste Beispiel ist die Inaktivierung eines X-Chromosoms bei weiblichen Säugetieren, das als sog. Barr-Körper in Interphasekernen sichtbar ist.
