Term: heterochromatin
Gramatical category: s
Definition: Chromatin of specific parts of certain chromosomes which remains condensed throughout interphase whilst retaining the deeply staining properties of metaphase chromosomes, but also a pattern of DNA replication out of phase with that of remaining euchromatic parts of the chromosomes, and a relative transcriptional inactivity.
Context: We propose that perpetuation of heterochromatin involves self-maintenance factors, including local concentration of Hp1α and -β, and that a degree of plasticity is provided by the cycle of H4 acetylation/deacetylation assisted by CAF-1.
