Definition: The nucleic acid in chromosomes and in which genetic information is coded.
Context: If genes are composed of DNA it is necessary that the latter should have a structure sufficiently versatile to account for the great variety of different genes and yet at the same time be able to reproduce itself in such a manner that an identical replica of itself is formed at each cell division.
