Definition: An isochromosome is a type of chromosomal aberration in which one of the arms of a particular chromosome is duplicated because the centromere divides transversely and not longitudinally during cell division and therefore, the two arms of an isochromosome are of equal length and contain same genes.
Context: an isochromosome of the short arm of chromosome 12 [i (12p)] was found in 20 specimens obtained from 16 patients, a 46, XY normal karyotype was present in seven specimens, and one specimen was a cytogenetic failure.
