- Definition: A densely staining mass in the somatic nuclei of mammalian females; an inactivated X chromosome.
- Context: The Barr body, as it came to be known, is not seen in the nuclei of the cells of normal males.
- Notes: Originally called sex chromatin or X-chromatine, its discovery in 1949 by two Canadian researchers, Murray Barr and Edward Bertram, led to a whole new field of study, human cytogenetics, the study of chromosome abnormalities.
