- Definition: Small RNA-containing particle in the cytoplasm of all cells actively engaged in protein synthesis.
- Context: The ribosome moves along the messenger-RNA in a zipper-like fashion, the amino acids linking up to form a polypeptide chain. When the completed polypeptide chain is released, the ribosome reattaches itself to a new starting point to a messenger-RNA.
